Charity Sew Day is on Saturday

The next Charity Sew Day is on Saturday February 4 from 10-4 at Grace Lutheran Church in Palo Alto.

Grace Lutheran Church
3149 Waverley St
Palo Alto, CA 94306

As you know, the guild was the recipient of a large amount of modern fabric last Fall. At the next charity sew day we will be making NICU quilts from the fat quarters that were part of the donation. We will be working with a line of florals and two Riley Blake fabrics: Fly Aweigh, a nautical line, and Oh Boy, which is all about transportation.

There are 64 fat quarters and we have fabric to make 32 NICU tops.  Each top should take about half an hour to complete.

Peggy spotted a quilt on the Quiltmaker site quilt, which will make a great and easy donation quilt. It is a variation on a Rail Fence. Michelle changed the size of the pieces to use up as much of the fat quarters as possible.

We have a few mats, rulers, and cutters, but bring your own favorite tools so we have enough to accommodate everyone.

Things to bring (in general):
  • Your name tag
  • Charity blocks and quilts
  • Non-messy snacks
  • Sewing gear (machine, mats, irons, etc)
Thanks to Michelle and Peggy for chairing Charity again and working hard to set up this Charity Sew Day and to Mary C for securing the place.

New Challenge: Color My Quilt

Color My Quilt is a new challenge conceived and hosted by Karen. By participating in this challenge you will:

  • Explore another member’s color palette
  • Explore colors outside of your typical selections
  • Experiment with design in a group setting
Each month we explore a color palette of that month’s Colorist.
The Colorist creates a set of 25 packets to had out at the meeting with the following information:

  1. A set of small fabric swatches representing the color palette
  2. A theme, concept, or idea in words and/or photos to inspire a direction
  3. Each participant goes home and makes a Chunk using that color palette with the following rules:
  4. No design requirements:  improv, regular block anything goes
  5. Use your own stash
  6. Stick to the palette:  no new colors except in very small amounts in a print
  7. You do not have to use all the colors in the palette
  8.  Minimal size of each side:  5”
  9. Maximum size of any side:  20”
  10. Add your name on a piece of paper / fabric and attach to your chunk
  11. Post photo on Instagram #colormyquilt
Follow on meeting:
  1. Each participant brings their Chunk to the meeting
  2. After the meeting, we can play and discuss design ideas together
Colorist:
  1. Owns the design and the chunks
  2. Will most likely need to add to the collection to complete the design
  3. Is free to cut, modify or not use any chunk of their choice
  4. The design will be a challenge!
  5. Post photos on Instagram using #colormyquilt
Repeat each month till we run out of members who wish to be Colorists.

We will use this Ning Forum to sign up Colorists for the month.  Pick a month, and I’ll add you to the list.

Sew Day Report!

Mary, once again, did a great job setting up and organizing the room for us. Thanks, Mary!

Haley's t-shirt quilt

Tim was there with his niece Haley and they put a t-shirt quilt together for her. She just graduated from college and the quilt is made from all of her college t-shirts. It looks great!

I worked on cutting. I started cutting for the second step of the En Provence mystery quilt. People have started posting the blocks and I am glad I am making it. I can choose some colors better now that I know what the piece will look like. I know I am not quite finished with step one, but cutting is a good thing to do at Sew Day and it doesn't go bad. I didn't feel like bringing my machine to the event.

Rhonda's Handwork Project

Rhonda worked on her Carolyn Friedlander handwork quilt. She started to put the segments together. Another great project!
